Endangered Asian Elephants Hang Around Preah Vihear Village, Farmers Count the Cost
A herd of six wild elephants has been living on the edge of a village in Preah Vihear province for close to a month, and provincial authorities say it shows no sign of moving on.
The animals have settled at a spot called Prey Keng, next to Po Khuon village in Po commune, Tbeng Meanchey district, according to a Preah Vihear provincial statement on September 4, 2026. Residents nearby have been told to stay alert and to help protect the herd.
Villagers say the elephants have been there for almost a month. They occasionally wander into the village itself and have broken down and eaten crops on local farms.
