H.E. Minister HUOT Hak: Film Tourism Is a Powerful Tool for Promoting Cambodia and Attracting International Tourists
Siem Reap Province: H.E. HUOT Hak, Minister of Tourism and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group for Coordinating and Supporting Film Tourism and Night-Time Temple Visits in Cambodia, presided over the closing ceremony of the National Workshop on “Promoting Film Tourism in Cambodia.” The workshop served as an important platform bringing together representatives from government institutions, the private sector, associations, and experts in tourism, culture, arts, and film to exchange views and identify practical measures to enhance Cambodia’s attractiveness and competitiveness as a Film Tourism Destination.
A key highlight of the workshop was the panel discussion on “Opportunities, Challenges, and Key Measures for Promoting Film Tourism,” which provided an opportunity for representatives of relevant institutions and experts from the film and tourism sectors to share experiences, perspectives, and recommendations, with a view to identifying strategic directions for the effective development of film tourism in Cambodia.
The panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Satya Harto, Tourism Promotion Officer of the Cambodia Tourism Marketing and Promotion Board, and featured speakers representing government institutions, associations, and the private sector, including H.E. Dr. Chuk Chumno, Director-General of Tourism Development and International Cooperation at the Ministry of Tourism; Mr. Chheab Sovichea, Deputy Director of Department at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts; Oknha Lay Kimsour, President of the Cambodia Hotel Association, Siem Reap Chapter; Mr. Sovann Makara, Deputy Secretary-General of the Khmer Artists Association; Mr. Chhay Bora, President of the Cambodia Film Association; Ms. Bun Channimol, Director-General of Sastra Film; and Mr. Nick Ray, representative of Hanuman Film.
During the discussion, the panelists highlighted Cambodia’s rich and diverse potential for attracting both domestic and international film productions. Cambodia possesses a wealth of cultural and historical heritage, ancient temples, spectacular natural landscapes, coastlines and islands, ecotourism destinations, vibrant cities, and the distinctive lifestyles of local communities—all of which offer diverse and uniquely Cambodian settings for film production.
The panel also emphasized that promoting film tourism should go beyond simply attracting production companies to film in Cambodia. More importantly, Cambodia should be able to transform “filming locations” into “tourism destinations” by connecting films and audiovisual productions with tourism products and itineraries, promoting featured destinations, creating new visitor experiences, and encouraging the active participation of local communities.
In his closing remarks, H.E. Minister HUOT Hak encouraged all relevant stakeholders to continue working together to foster an enabling environment for both domestic and international film productions, while strengthening the promotion of Cambodia’s filming locations and tourism potential. The goal is to develop Film Tourism as a new tourism product and an integral component of Cambodia’s Soft Power, contributing to attracting more international visitors, generating employment and income for local communities, and enhancing Cambodia’s reputation and positive image on the international stage.
