**Divine Statue Heads Return to Angkor Thom Victory Gate SIEM REAP – Heads of divine statues are finally being attached to their bodies at the Victory Gate of the ancient Angkor Thom walled city in Angkor Archaeological Park. Leaders of national and international institutions joined a ceremony on Oct. 1 to mark the beginning of a restoration effort to attach the heads and bodies of 108 statues lining the sides of the stone causeway. The Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, Director General of Apsara National Authority, representatives of UNESCO Cambodia and the US Embassy to Cambodia attended the ceremony. Known to have existed since the late 12th century, these oversized statues are considered sacred. They feature depictions of devas and asuras, gods and demons, clutching on a serpentine creature bearing multiple heads. These sculptural dances in stone speak of a popular Hindu myth known as the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, a common scene carved in a lot of ancient Khmer architecture. Acting as a prominent and imposing visual art to the architecture, these statues are synonymous with Angkor Thom Walled City, a three-by-three kilometer complex housing multiple large temples.
