Toxic Smog Chokes Chiang Mai as Tourists Avoid Songkran Travel
CHIANG MAI, April 3, 2026 — Thick toxic smog has engulfed northern Thailand ahead of the Songkran holiday, driving tourists away from Chiang Mai and raising fresh concerns over the country’s environmental and tourism outlook.
Chiang Mai was ranked the world’s most polluted city this week, as worsening wildfires and agricultural burning pushed air quality to hazardous levels, according to data from air monitoring firm IQAir.
