**US City Marks Week of Cambodian Genocide Remembrance TACOMA, WASHINGTON – While most people embrace Khmer New Year celebrations, many still remember the day when Cambodia plunged into darkness for nearly four years. April 17, 1975, was when Khmer Rouge soldiers took over Phnom Penh and forced people to flee the city en masse to provinces. From then until 1979, Cambodia faced one of the most dramatic periods of history, with millions of deaths and millions more displaced. Some returned home. Others made it out to America with humanitarian support but the memory of the Khmer Rouge regime still lingers. The Cambodian-American community of Tacoma city in Washington state assembled at the city hall for a proclamation of April 12-18, 2026, as “Cambodian Genocide Remembrance Week”.
