Day one of Khmer New Year in Siem Reap kicked off in the late afternoon, with people splashing water and smearing powder on each other’s faces. Shops and homes placed water containers out front, playfully dousing passersby. Some armed themselves with water guns, while others piled into the backs of pickup trucks, cruising around for splash battles.
With daytime temperatures reaching 38–39°C, many stayed indoors to avoid the heat, only coming out later in the day as the celebrations began.
