Opinion: Importing from China to Cambodia: Why Cash Flow Matters More Than Profit Margin
By Yinghang Wu
A transaction can be priced entirely in dollars and still leave a Cambodian importer short of riel. This is especially important when importing from China, where supplier payments, freight, local distribution and customer collection can operate on very different timelines. The real risk is not simply the exchange rate. It is the gap between those events—and who is left financing it.
For a Cambodian importer or local distributor sourcing products from China, a landed-cost worksheet can bring the purchase price, freight, duties and local delivery into a single currency. That is useful, but it remains only a cost snapshot. The business also needs to know which currency will enter and leave each account, on what date, and under whose control.
Four clocks make the cash gap visible. The supplier clock covers deposit and balance milestones with the Chinese supplier. The logistics clock covers freight from China, customs clearance and local handling in Cambodia. The dealer clock begins when stock is released, whether for cash or on credit. The customer clock ends only when sale proceeds are actually collected, after discounts, returns and payment fees. A transaction can show a healthy margin while those four clocks leave the Cambodian importer funding the gap alone.
Currency labels should follow the transaction, not the spreadsheet. A Cambodian dealer may be quoted in dollars b
