Every cigarette butt or piece of rubbish thrown onto the street eventually becomes someone else’s responsibility — and sometimes cleaning it up means putting another person’s life at risk.
Early in the morning on Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar Bridge, street cleaners can be seen collecting discarded litter from the narrow edge of the roadway. With cars, motorcycles and heavy vehicles passing close by, it’s a dangerous job that should not be made more dangerous by careless behaviour.

Left on the street, filters and other waste can remain in the environment, enter drains and waterways and ultimately pollute the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. Throwing rubbish from a vehicle, dropping trash on a bridge or leaving waste on the pavement does not make it disappear — it simply transfers the burden to cleaners, communities and the environment.
Keeping Cambodia clean should not depend only on sanitat
