**Khmer Sbai Shawls Showed at Nokor Sankranta PHNOM PENH — Several Khmer Sbai, which are a long, rectangular, shawl‑like Cambodian garments, were showcased in different styles at the Nokor Sankranta event on April 17. The Khmer Sbai were presented with elegance by several Cambodian women, bringing this tradition to life. The Khmer Sbai is a garment believed to have been part of the Khmer heritage since the country’s Funan era of the 1st through the 6th centuries. It is traditionally made of silk or fine fabric and is often associated with women’s ceremonial dresses. During weddings in Cambodia, the bride and groom wear the Sbai for the monk’s blessing, the groom’s parade and the knot‑tying ceremonies. The most marking moment is the rite known as Preah Thong Taong Sbai Neang Neak — which means Preah Thong holding on to the Sbai of the serpent princess Neang Neak—during the wedding ceremony.
