**Cambodia: Custodian of Khmer Culture and Civilization!** **Cambodia is not merely a land of ancient temples and a rich cultural heritage. It is the birthplace of Khmer culture and civilization, built, sustained, and preserved through centuries of history. From language, literature, religion, art, architecture, music, and dance to customs, traditions, and the everyday way of life of the Cambodian people, all reflect the identity and creativity of the Khmer nation.** **The phrase “Cambodia is the custodian of Khmer culture and civilization” does not simply mean asserting ownership over the heritage of the past. It carries a deeper meaning: the Khmer people are the inheritors of a legacy passed down by their ancestors, and they bear the responsibility to preserve, protect, develop, and transmit that legacy to future generations.** **The living evidence of Khmer civilization can be found across Cambodia. Angkor, Preah Vihear Temple, Sambor Prei Kuk, ancient monuments, inscriptions, and countless works of art demonstrate the advanced knowledge and achievements of Khmer ancestors in architecture, engineering, water management, astronomy, the arts, and social organization.** **Yet Khmer civilization does not live only in stone temples. It continues to live in the Khmer language and script, the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, Lakhon Khol, Chapei Dang Veng, Kun Lbokator, oral traditions, religious and cultural ceremonies, and the customs practiced in the daily lives of Cambodian people.** **This is evidence that Khmer culture is not a heritage to be left silent in museums. It is a living heritage, passed from one generation to the next.** **To be the custodian of a heritage does not mean simply taking pride in it. Custodianship must come with responsibility.** **If we say that Khmer culture and civilization belong to us, we must also ask ourselves: What are we doing to protect them? To what extent do Cambodian youth understand their own history, language, arts, and cultural values? Are we making full use of digital technology to tell the story of our heritage, or are we allowing others to tell that story on our behalf?** **Cambodia is the custodian of Khmer culture and civilization because this is the legacy created and passed down by our ancestors. We have inherited this heritage from them. We have a duty to protect it in our generation, and we must pass it on to future generations without allowing its identity and values to be lost.** **Khmer culture is the soul of the nation.
