Picture of the Day: Naga in Ancient Khmer Arts
Naga, the many-headed king of serpents, is a mythological animal regarded as the ruler of the underworld. In the Buddhist context, Naga is often depicted sheltering the Buddha as, according to the legend, Naga Mucalinda emerged from a river to protect the Buddha from a torrential rainstorm.
In Hinduism, Lord Vishnu is portrayed reclining upon the Naga Ananta and is associated with the creation of the world. Another naga named Vasuki allowed, in the Hindu epic tale Mahabharata, his body to be used by the gods and demons as a rope to churn the Ocean of Milk.
In Cambodian mythology, a naga princess is connected to the birth of the country. In ancient as well as contemporary architecture, naga are represented in great serpentine balustrades flanking causeways, bridges, water basins and finials. The multiple heads of the naga are always in odd numbers, usually three, five, seven or nine.
