Colombo, Sri Lanka - Bustling Pettah Market in central Colombo is a hive of activity, with vendors - the majority of whom are men - flogging everything from fresh produce and fashion accessories to electrical goods and jewellery at the bustling wholesale and retail market.
Despite temperatures soaring to about 30C in August, the market remains popular with tourists visiting the iconic Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, or Red Mosque. Famed for its distinctive red-and-white striped design, the vast structure can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers. Built in 1909 by Colombo’s Indian Muslim community, the mosque remains one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
