Cambodia to Rely on UNCLOS Arbitration if Thailand Withdraws MoU
PHNOM PENH, May 4, 2026 — Cambodia will rely on international law, including mechanisms under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), if Thailand unilaterally withdraws from the 2001 memorandum of understanding on overlapping maritime claims, a senior foreign ministry official said.
Kong Phok, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said Cambodia has no alternative but to turn to international legal frameworks, particularly compulsory dispute settlement mechanisms under UNCLOS, should the bilateral agreement be scrapped.
