From Farmers’ Fields to Tourists’ Tables: Cambodia Strengthens Its Strategy to Reduce Imports of Vegetables, Fish, Meat and Food Products, While Reinforcing Domestic Production Chains through the Joint Promotion of “Green Belts” in Tourism Areas The Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries jointly organized a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on “Cooperation to Promote Green Belts in Tourism Areas and Enhance the Efficiency of Agricultural Production Chains.” The ceremony was presided over by H.E. HUOT Hak, Minister of Tourism, and H.E. DITH Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, with the participation of H.E. PRAK Sophoan, Governor of Siem Reap Province, along with leaders and officials from both ministries, totaling approximately 60 participants. This cooperation between the two ministries is in line with the spirit and recommendations of the 19th Government–Private Sector Forum, with a particular focus on reducing “economic leakage” in the tourism sector. The MoU sets out four key strategic objectives: 1. Enhance the effectiveness of cooperation between the two ministries in implementing Royal Government measures to establish green belts and strengthen agricultural production chains; 2. Facilitate timely and effective information exchange on demand and supply between farmers/agricultural communities and tourism operators or businesses; 3. Develop concrete action plans to maximize the use of locally produced agricultural products in tourism establishments; and 4. Promote the development of agri-tourism and ecotourism areas within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. On the occasion of the MoU signing, H.E. HUOT Hak emphasized that tourism and agriculture are two important pillars of the economy that complement and support one another. The development of local agriculture not only generates income and improves the livelihoods of farmers at the grassroots level, but also provides a strong foundation for supplying safe food and promoting the identity of Cambodian cuisine to tourists. Complementing this, the growth in tourist arrivals serves as a catalyst for creating a broader and more sustainable market for farmers and local communities.
