Sand Stupa Ordination Ritual Welcomes Khmer New Year in Siem Reap SIEM REAP — Buddhist monks and laypeople at Preah Ang Sangtuk Pagoda gathered to perform the traditional sand stupa ordination ritual, known as Bam Bous Phnom Khsach, as part of Khmer New Year celebrations. The sand stupas, or Phnom Khsach, are carefully shaped to symbolize the sacred Chulamani Stupa—believed to enshrine the Buddha’s hair in heaven. Building these stupas is considered an act of merit-making, reflecting devotion and spiritual renewal. The ritual takes place over two days, from April 14 to 15, marking the first and second days of the three-day New Year celebration. On the final day, April 16—known as Veareak Laeung Sak—the pagoda will host the Srang Preah (Bathing of the Buddha) ceremony starting at 1 p.m., in accordance with Khmer tradition and custom.
