Picture of the Day: Singha in Ancient Khmer Arts
The lion, considered the king of animals, has long been a popular symbol of royalty, protection and pride.
Since the Pre-Angkorian period, the lion has been depicted in Khmer art in three-dimensional sculptures, most of them representing him with round, bulging eyes, thick and bushy eyebrows, and a roaring open mouth.
The lions usually appear on both sides of a temple’s entrance steps, serving as guardians. In addition, they are represented on temple bas-reliefs, lintels and pilasters as a vehicle of the Hindu deity Durga.
