H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, received a courtesy call from H.E. Leung Chun Ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Chairman of GX Foundation, former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and his senior delegation on strengthening tourism cooperation, promoting Cambodia's tourism potential, and attracting more visitors from Hong Kong SAR to Cambodia at the Ministry of Tourism Headquarters.
During the productive meeting, H.E. Leung Chun Ying expressed his sincere appreciation to the Minister for receiving the GX Foundation's senior delegation and for the opportunity to engage in an in-depth exchange of views on strengthening and expanding tourism cooperation, as well as jointly promoting Cambodia's tourism potential more widely among the people of Hong Kong SAR. These promotional efforts will be carried out during Cambodia's pilot visa exemption program for Chinese nationals from 15 June to 15 October 2026. On this occasion, H.E. Leung also briefed the Minister on the Foundation's humanitarian achievements in Cambodia, including providing free cataract surgeries to thousands of Cambodian citizens and implementing vector-borne disease prevention programs across several provinces.
In response, H.E. the Minister highly praised and expressed his sincere appreciation for the active contributions of GX Foundation in both the tourism and humanitarian sectors, noting that these efforts have made a significant contribution to strengthening the friendship between Cambodia and China. The Minister also requested H.E. Leung to continue promoting Cambodia's tourism potential more extensively among the people of Hong Kong SAR, particularly during the pilot visa exemption campaign for Chinese tourists. In addition, he encouraged support for organizing Familiarization (FAM) Trips for investors, media representatives, and tourism operators to explore Cambodia's tourism potential. Furthermore, the Minister requested the Foundation to consider the possibility of dispatching a medical team to provide free medical consultations and treatment for residents in Baray District, Kampong Thom Province.
It is worth noting that 2026 marks the 68th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the People's Republic of China, providing a strong foundation for expanding cooperation across all sectors, particularly tourism. In 2025, Cambodia welcomed approximately 5.6 million international visitors, including around 1.2 million Chinese tourists, representing a 42% increase compared to 2024. During the first five months of 2026, Cambodia received more than 1.5 million international tourists, of whom over 400,000 were Chinese visitors, making China Cambodia's largest source tourism market.
To be Informed that GX Foundation is a Hong Kong SAR-based, non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to providing healthcare services and humanitarian assistance in developing countries. In Cambodia, the Foundation has successfully implemented free cataract surgery programs and various public health initiatives, benefiting communities across the country.
