A new high-tech “digital twin” is making the task of providing clean drinking water to over three million people much easier for engineers in central India. Orange City Water (OCW) has successfully launched a sophisticated virtual map of Nagpur’s massive underground water network, allowing operators to see exactly what is happening beneath the city streets in real time.
Before this technology was introduced, vital information about pipes, pumps, and water pressure was scattered across different computer systems. This made it difficult for engineers to get a complete picture of the city’s water health.
By using a platform called OpenFlows WaterSight, OCW has combined all that data into one cloud-based dashboard. This “digital twin” acts like a flight simulator for the water network, showing how water moves through the city and predicting how a change in one neighborhood might affect the water pressure in another.
The benefits of this smart system are already being felt by local residents. Because engineers can now spot leaks and pump failures almost instantly, they can fix problems before faucets run dry. The technology has helped the city maintain a 98% water quality rating and is a key tool in reducing water waste. If a pipe breaks, the system allows teams to test different solutions virtually before they even send a repair crew into the field, ensuring service is restored as quickly as possible.
