Thailand continues building roads and military bunkers in Cambodian territory
By Meng Bill
PHNOM PENH, Aug. 22, 2026 — Thai armed forces have constructed additional military bunkers near the World Heritage site of Preah Vihear Temple in Cambodian territory, Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
In a press statement issued on Aug. 22, the ministry said Thai forces constructed additional military bunkers on Aug. 20 north of Keo Sikha Kiri Svara Pagoda, adjacent to Preah Vihear Temple in Sra Em commune, Preah Vihear province.
Sources at the border said that, in addition to the bunkers, Thai forces had also installed a new Buddha statue in the area.
In a separate move, Thai armed forces progressively cleared forest and constructed a new road in O’Smach, Samraong City, Oddar Meanchey province, between July 26 and Aug. 17, according to the ministry.
The ministry said the road runs from an area north of Boundary Pillar No. 14 toward Ta Thong Mountain, also known as Hill 278.
Cambodia lodged a strong protest against what it described as “Thailand’s continued violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity along the Cambodia-Thailand border.”
The ministry said the activities constituted clear violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and were contrary to existing agreements between the two countries.
Under the December 2025 joint statement, Thailand agreed to refer the border matter to the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and resume survey and demarcation work at the earliest opportunity in accordance with existing agreements.
“Cambodia does not recognize any boundary line or territorial claim unilaterally asserted by Thailand,” the ministry said.
“The above-mentioned activities shall not prejudice the legal rights or position of Cambodia with respect to its international boundary,” it added.
The Cambodian government urged Thailand to immediately cease such activities and honour its commitments to de-escalating tensions, building mutual trust and facilitating the peaceful settlement of disputes.
