The development of community-based tourism and ecotourism cannot be achieved by the Ministry of Tourism alone. It requires close collaboration among the Royal Government, development partners, the private sector, and local communities to create economic opportunities, conserve natural resources, and sustainably improve the livelihoods of local people.
H.E. HUOT Hak, Minister of Tourism and Chair of the National Committee for the Management and Development of Community-Based Tourism and Ecotourism, presided over a consultation meeting with development partners working in the fields of tourism, community-based tourism, and ecotourism. The meeting aimed to review the progress of community-based tourism and ecotourism initiatives, learn from partners’ experiences, exchange perspectives and innovative ideas, and identify new opportunities to strengthen cooperation and promote the sustainable development of tourism communities.
The meeting was attended by senior leaders of the Ministry of Tourism, along with representatives from 14 national and international development partner organizations working in tourism and community-based tourism, including the Fisheries Action Coalition Team (FACT), Culture and Environment Preservation Association (CEPA), Forests and Livelihoods Organisation (FLO), Non-Timber Forest Products – Exchange Programme Cambodia (NTFP-EP Cambodia), Mlup Baitong, Landesa, Wildlife Conservation Society Cambodia (WCS), Fauna & Flora, NatureLife Cambodia, Conservation International Cambodia (CI Cambodia), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and WWF Cambodia, with a total of 60 participants.
In his remarks, H.E. the Minister emphasized that the Royal Government of Cambodia, under the wise leadership of Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has consistently attached high priority to the development of community-based tourism, recognizing tourism as a key driver for job creation, income generation at the local level, poverty reduction, and the prevention of rural-to-urban migration.
Following presentations and discussions by the development partners, H.E. the Minister called for stronger and broader cooperation through both existing and new coordination mechanisms, including the Tonle Sap Ecotourism Network and the Mekong Ecotourism Network. He also encouraged development partners to share information on project locations, supported communities, planned activities, and priority intervention areas so that the Ministry of Tourism can better coordinate efforts and provide more effective technical support.
Furthermore, H.E. the Minister proposed organizing Project Matching sessions between development partners and tourism communities as side events alongside relevant meetings and workshops, particularly during the upcoming National Forum on Community-Based Tourism and Ecotourism and the National Gathering of Tourism Communities, which will be held in the near future.
