Before sunrise, thousands of visitors gathered at Angkor Wat on September 21 to witness a rare spectacle as the rising sun appeared almost directly behind the temple’s central tower.
The first day of Angkor Equinox 2026 drew local and international tourists to Siem Reap, with visitors arriving early to catch the sunrise over the ancient temple.
The phenomenon occurs twice a year, around the March and September equinoxes, when the sun rises almost directly behind Angkor Wat’s central tower.
This year’s September equinox takes place from September 21 to 23, during Cambodia’s rainy season. Changing weather and cloudy skies can make the sunrise difficult to see, but that did not deter thousands of visitors from making the early-morning journey.
