**Ta Koeung Baitang: the “Waiting Village” of Preah Vihear
PREAH VIHEAR – Visually dominated by green roofs and surrounded by thin forest, the newly established Ta Koeung Baitang village now houses about 645 families whose hometowns have been seriously affected by the border clashes in Preah Vihear province.
Built in a grid format and equipped with electricity, running water and clean toilets, the village acts as a temporary shelter, also known as a “waiting village”.
Displaced civilians are expected to stay at the village, about 60km from the border, for quite some time.
A health center, a police station, a nursery and a primary school have been established. Authorities plan to run a junior high school soon.
Small businesses have emerged in response to the needs of the people. Motorbike repair shops, coffee stands, logistic branches and other simple food stands can be seen. Some people cultivate the land around their house with fresh produce.
The border clashes have left much of Preah Vihear province border infrastructure in ruins including the UNESCO site of Preah Vihear temple, administration buildings, health centers, schools, roads and pagodas.**
