**ASEAN Chief Urges Cambodia, Thailand to Settle Border Dispute Ahead of Bloc's 60th Anniversary SINGAPORE – ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn said he hoped diplomacy would help Cambodia and Thailand resolve their border conflict, stressing that 2027 would be a defining year for the regional bloc as it marks its 60th anniversary. “Next year, we're going to be celebrating the 60th anniversary of ASEAN. And that will be the defining year for ASEAN,” Kim Hourn told Cambodianess on Oct. 26. “So what's important is that Cambodia and Thailand will have to resolve the issue together.” He added that Cambodia and Thailand were neighbors and would remain so permanently. “So I think they have to treat each other with respect. They have to address the bilateral issues constructively, and they have to come to terms with the realities,” he said. He also stressed that resolving the dispute was crucial to regional peace and prosperity and ASEAN's credibility. “Moreover, it is so crucial for ASEAN, the credibility of ASEAN, that we must resolve bilateral disputes in a way that will not happen again like what happened last year in 2025,” he said. Asked whether both countries should do more to restore diplomatic ties, as recommended under the UNCLOS conciliatory process, Kim Hourn said he hoped the dispute would be resolved diplomatically, peacefully and amicably.
