UK Minister Visits Conflict-Affected Community in Oddar Meanchey
AKP Phnom Penh, August 26, 2026 --
UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific H.E. Ms. Rosie Winterton visited a community affected by the recent Cambodia-Thailand border conflict in Oddar Meanchey province this morning, according to Provincial Governor H.E. Mean Chanyada.
H.E. Ms. Winterton visited Kork Prasat Primary School in Pha-ong village, Sangkat Kon Kriel, Samrong city, to see first-hand the impact of the conflict on the local community and the progress of a UK-supported education programme for children displaced by the fighting.
Governor H.E. Mean Chanyada said the visit demonstrated the spirit of international solidarity and the concern of the British Government and people for restoring education and providing hope to children affected by the conflict.
“The presence of H.E. Ms. Rosie Winterton in Oddar Meanchey province and her visit to Kork Prasat Primary School today is a clear testament to the spirit of international solidarity and the high concern of the British government and people in contributing to the restoration of education and bringing hope to children affected by the war,” he said.
The Governor stressed that peace is essential to ensure that no child is deprived of opportunities to learn and develop. He added that the visit would contribute to efforts to restore education facilities in Oddar Meanchey while highlighting the importance of protecting education in conflict-affected areas.
According to the British Embassy in Cambodia, H.E. Ms. Winterton observed a UK-funded education programme in action, met children whose difficult experiences had not diminished their commitment to learning, and heard from families and community leaders about their priorities and needs.
Together with Governor H.E. Mean Chanyada, the Minister also discussed ways for the UK to continue working with local partners to support affected communities and help children remain in school, the Embassy said.
The UK remains committed to working with Cambodia and its partners to support affected communities, keep children learning, and encourage peaceful dialogue and cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia, it added.
