H.E. Minister HUOT Hak: “The Pilot Visa Exemption for Chinese Citizens Is a Key Driver for the Implementation of the Cambodia–China Tourism Year” H.E. HUOT Hak, Minister of Tourism and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Facilitating the Travel and Transport of Tourists and Passengers at International Border Checkpoints and International Gateways nationwide, chaired a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee to review the practical progress of the pilot visa exemption for Chinese citizens and assess its strengths, shortcomings, and challenges over the nearly two-month implementation period, from 15 June to 14 August 2026. The meeting also aimed to identify appropriate solutions to further enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the policy’s implementation. This important meeting was attended by 42 participants, including Their Excellencies and Lok Chumteavs, leaders of the Ministry of Tourism; representatives of the Office of the Council of Ministers, the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, the General Department of Immigration, the General Commissariat of National Police, relevant ministries and institutions; as well as representatives of the private sector, including the Cambodia Tourism Federation, Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, and Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia Chapter. As a result of concerted efforts following the meeting held on 25 May 2026, the Royal Government of Cambodia, under the wise leadership of Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, granted its high-level approval in principle for the establishment of “Information Counters” at international gateways. These counters are intended to facilitate and provide information to tourists during the implementation of the pilot policy. The Inter-Ministerial Committee mechanism has also been designated to lead and coordinate this work to ensure its smooth and effective implementation. According to a report by the Angkor Enterprise, from 15 June to 12 August 2026, the number of Chinese tourists purchasing admission tickets to the Angkor Archaeological Park increased by approximately 13.23% compared with the same period in 2025. This figure clearly reflects the growing confidence and trust of Chinese tourists and investors in Cambodia as a safe, attractive, and welcoming tourism destination. It should be noted that the pilot visa exemption for Chinese citizens, implemented from 15 June to 15 October 2026, represents a strategic step toward attracting greater flows of Chinese tourists and investors to Cambodia.
