Picture of the Day: Rahu in Ancient Khmer Arts
Images of the Hindu celestial body Rahu are seen at both Buddhist and Hindu temples. Rahu is often depicted in human form, highlighted by a fiery face, large round eyes, a human or lion nose, claw-like hands, and a large mouth.
During the pre-Angkorian period, figures of Rahu were primarily sculpted on the center of lintels. The motif later changed to Rahu being presented with two short arms wrapped around animals, floral patterns or human figures.
Present-day images are painted on columns and other elements of Buddhist monasteries as well as on coffins. In Khmer culture, Rahu represents time (kala) and the cycle of death and rebirth.
