It’s about empowering the Kreung Indigenous community, and especially the girls whose futures are too often cut short by early marriages. Our journalists traveled to Tus Chrech village in Koun Mom district, roughly 20 kilometers from the provincial capital, Banlung, and three kilometers down an unpaved red-dirt road. The village is home to about 60 families, 30 percent Khmer and 70 percent Kreung. There, the journalists found a community with limited access to education and a longstanding culture of marrying young. According to UNICEF, nearly half of the young women in Ratanakiri province are married before age 18, the highest rate in the country. With the introduction of Kun Lbokator, the children of Tus Chrech village are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
