**Western Mebon Temple Reemerges from the Water
SIEM REAP - After years of restoration, the Western Mebon temple is now open to the public, an archaeological site and a historical monument of remarkable importance to Cambodia’s Angkor Park.
Located in a man-made reservoir measuring roughly 8 kilometers by 2 kilometers, this 11th-century “island” temple was reclaimed by nature for centuries before a number of major restoration efforts finally took place during the modern time.
Uniquely designed compared to other ancient temples in Cambodia, Western Mebon can only be accessed by boats during rainy seasons.
Partially submerged underwater, the temple presented a monumental challenge for many local and international temple restorers, requiring multiple experts and skilled stone masons to revive this particular spirit of ancient Cambodia.**
